For stories under 1000 words that display overall excellence in literary composition, character establishment and narrative.
Outstanding Never-Ending Story
For stand-alone stories with a word count over 25K that have ended in the current eligibility period.
Outstanding Series
For a series of stand-alone stories that occur withing one fanfiction universe and whose most recent story has been completed during the current awards eligibility period. A series is considered as two or more stories that are connected.
Outstanding Work in Progress
The Work-in-Progress category is exempt from the eligibility requirements. For stories that are not yet completed or are completed after the beginning of the nomination period.
Alternate Universe
For stories set outside the realm of the show but not including crossovers, pre- or post- show.
Angst
For stories focused on mental anguish.
Case File
For stories with a realistic portrayal of an investigation, mission or undercover assignment that has been designated to the team.
Crack!Fic
For stories in which the characters are put into random or nonsensical situations, are intentionally out of character or other variation of the splendidly absurd.
Crossover
For stories that involve existing characters from other television series, films, books, etc.
Death
For stories focused on death, where the death may occur within the story or the story may be based around characters' reactions to a death.
Episode Tag or Missing Scene
For stories that fill in missing scenes during episodes or pick up where an episode left off.
Humor
For stories written with an exceptional level of humor.
NFA Challenge Response
For stories that were originally submitted in answer to an NFA challenge. The story did not have to win the challenge in order to be nominated here. Skills Challenge entries and WWC entries are also eligible in this category.
NFA Games
For outstandingly written responses to NFA games such as the Weekly Writing Game, Hangman prizes and Jumbled Storytelling, as well as stories written for exchanges such as Secret Santa, the White Elephant Exchange or the Haiti Auction fics.
Poem
For poetry inspired by or based on NCIS. Can be any length or poetic style.
Pre/Post NCIS
For stories about one or more characters prior to or after the existing series.
Recollection
For stories that deal with events occurring in the past via the memory of one of the characters
Songfic
For stories written alongside a particular song. Can be a one-shot or multi-chapter story based on more than one song.

For stories that display an exceptional level of suspenseful writing in technique and structure; both in combination with situations and action contained in the story, as well as the inclusion of cliffhangers.

For stories focused on physical suffering.
Action
For stories containing one or more exceptional portrayals of a suspenseful and riveting action sequence.
Death
For stories containing one or more exceptional portrayals of a realistic, empathetic and dramatic death scene.
Plot Twist
For stories with one or more shocking or unexpected plot twists.
Secret
For stories with one or more highly shocking or unexpected secret.
